What can I do if my mobile phone is stolen?

You can prevent a thief from using your mobile phone subscription just by calling your phone company and telling them you lost your phone – they can block your device from being used. If you have a SIM in your phone, you can also lock your phone with a PIN code. The SIM will block any service if the PIN is wrongly entered three times.

If your phone has a SIM, you can also prevent the thief from using your stolen phone with his/her own SIM. To do this, you will need to know your phone’s unique identification number, called the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity). If you can also give this number to your phone company, they can block the handset from being used with a different SIM. In many cases, you can obtain your handset’s IMEI by entering *#06# on your handset, but your phone may be different. Check with your manufacturer or user’s manual. Note the IMEI and keep it in a safe place.

If you have a smartphone, there are applications that can help you to find your phone or restrict its use. For iPhones, users can download the Find My iPhone application from iTunes. If the phone is on, the application allows users to see where in the world their phone is, set or change a screen lock password, and even force the phone to sound an alarm and display a message. For Android phones, there are applications such as Lookout, Prey and Cerberus available from Google Play that provide the same protection as Apple’s Find My iPhone application, plus some of them allow you to listen through the phone’s microphone or view the phone’s current surroundings through its camera.

To help prevent any unauthorized calls in case your phone is lost or stolen, setting up your device’s PIN (personal identification number) or lock code is an excellent way to reduce the risk of unauthorized calls and charges, particularly if your phone is stolen. To change the pre-set default PIN number for your particular model of phone, check online at www.t-mobile.com or contact Customer Care at 1-800-937-8997.

You can also set up a PIN for your SIM card. When enabled, your phone will prompt you for the SIM PIN when the phone is powered on. Entering the wrong PIN will prevent you (or someone else) from making or receiving calls. SIM PINs are different from the Security Code your phone may use to secure other phone functions. If your phone is lost or stolen, contact T-Mobile Customer Care immediately at 1-800-937-8997. Or, if you have access to another T-Mobile phone, simply dial 6-1-1.

You will not be liable for unauthorized airtime charges incurred on a phone that is lost, or stolen if you:

– Notify T-Mobile immediately

– Ask to have the lost/stolen phone deactivated

– Provide, within 14 days, any documentation requested, including a police report.

– You must fulfill the remainder or your term by activating a replacement phone, or the cancellation fee will apply.
