The top 3 innovations in mobile to look out for in 2019

As the evolution of technology continues at an ever-increasing pace it can be difficult to decipher what are the biggest up-and-coming trends in mobile technology.

The Mobile World Congress this year showcased the latest selection of the best mobile tech innovations from around the world, promising us some big developments in 2019.

We’ve selected the top 3 most-talked about technologies at MWC Barcelona that we expect to make a big impact this year. Below we’ve outlined how these innovations might benefit your day-to-day life.

Foldable phones

Although this might seem like a story from 2005, foldable phones are back with a bang! The newest devices, however, have evolved quite a bit since the days of the baby pink Motorola RAZR V3 (pictured below). The latest releases, including the Samsung Galaxy Fold, the Huawei Mate X and the Royole FlexPai, to name but a few, look to bridge the gap between a mobile phone and a tablet device, giving customers the best of both worlds. When folded inwards the phone becomes a pocket sized, on-the-go mobile, easy to transport and convenient for users to hold. However, once the device is folded outwards it becomes a larger tablet-like device, similar to a Kindle or iPad and with a bigger screen. That way it becomes ideal for watching movies, reading books, or playing games.

2005 vs 2019 foldable phones:

The fifth generation mobile connectivity 5G is set to be rolled out at the end of this year and phone manufacturers have been busy designing mobile phones that will be compatible with the faster network. Huawei, LG, Samsung, Xiaomi, and ZTE introduced their own 5G phones at this year’s MWC.

5G networks will allow compatible phones access to even faster download speeds, meaning that, with no disruption, a HD or 4K movie could be downloaded in a minute or two. In addition to faster download speeds, users will be able to get a stronger signal in crowded areas, such as concerts or football matches – events that currently struggle with network signal. However, current mobile phone devices that run on 4G or 3G won’t be compatible with the new network so you will need to purchase a specific 5G phone to take advantage of this.

An embedded SIM card or eSIM is a small chip inside your phone that removes the need for physical SIM cards. For customers, a phone that has an eSIM will be beneficial particularly when switching network providers. The information on an eSIM is rewritable, meaning that if you decide to change to a different network carrier this can be done with a simple phone call rather than waiting for a new SIM card to arrive in the post.

Additionally, rather than waiting for a PAC code to keep your mobile phone number the same, the new eSIM will keep the old number automatically. Finally, connecting multiple eSIMs together is much easier. So, for example, if you wanted to put your whole family on a data plan, connecting devices with eSIMs to one account can be done in minutes.
