Can I make free international calls?

Has your friend gone on holiday? Has your son just moved to Australia for his new job? Keeping in touch with friends overseas has traditionally been expensive, but it’s now possible to speak to people abroad for free using ‘Voice over IP’ services. Essentially this means using the internet to make calls from your mobile or computer, using your existing connection.

So if you need to make international calls and want to do it for free (except for the existing cost of your internet connection), here are a few ways you can do it.

  1. Smartphone apps

If you’ve got a smartphone with internet access, there are several free apps, such as Skype, Viber, and WhatsApp which allow to you call anyone else using the same app.

However remember that mobile data charges may apply if you make calls via your phone’s 3G or 4G connection, depending on your contract.

  1. Apple devices running iOS

If you’ve got an Apple device like an iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Mac computer with Mac OS X v10.6.6 or above, you can make free calls to other Apple users using FaceTime. FaceTime supports video as well, so you’ll be able to see who you’re talking to!

  1. From a computer

If you don’t have an Apple computer, or need to speak to someone who can’t use FaceTime, there are lots of other desktop applications available, such as Skype or Viber for Desktop. These can even allow you to call someone’s phone from your computer – however if you want to do that, charges may apply.
